1. Who we are
The Left Bank ("we", "us", "our") is a bar and restaurant at 33-35 Gibson Street, Glasgow G12 8NU. We are the data controller responsible for any personal information you provide to us through our website at www.theleftbank.co.uk.
If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your information, please contact us at contact@theleftbank.co.uk.
2. What information we collect
We only collect personal information that we genuinely need to run our business and serve you well.
Information you give us directly
- Bookings: When you book a table through our website, you provide your name, email address, phone number, party size, requested date and time, and any notes (for example dietary requirements). This is collected by our reservations partner Toast on our behalf.
- Gift cards: When you buy an e-gift card online, our payments partner Toast collects your name and email address, the recipient's name and email address, any personal message you add, and your payment details. Payment is handled entirely by Toast; we never see your card details.
- Email correspondence: If you email us at contact@theleftbank.co.uk, we receive whatever you choose to send us, typically your name, email address, and the contents of your message.
Information collected automatically
- Cookies and similar technologies: When you visit our website, we and our partners may set cookies on your device to make the site work, understand how it's used, and (with your consent) measure and personalise advertising. See section 7 for details.
- Analytics data: Information about how you use our site (pages viewed, time on site, referring website, approximate location, device and browser) is collected via Google Analytics 4 only if you accept Statistics cookies.
- Advertising data: If you accept Marketing cookies, the Meta Pixel collects information about your activity on our site so we can show you relevant ads on Facebook and Instagram and measure how our ads perform.
We do not collect special category data (health, ethnicity, political views, religion, sexual orientation, biometric or genetic data) or full payment card details through this website. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16; our website is intended for adults, and alcohol is only served to those aged 18 and over in line with our Premises Licence.
3. Why we use your information and our lawful basis
Under UK GDPR we must have a lawful basis for using your personal information. Here's what we do and why:
- Taking and managing your table booking: contract, to fulfil your booking request
- Processing your gift card purchase: contract, to supply the gift card you've bought
- Replying to your email enquiry: legitimate interests, answering customers who contact us
- Site analytics (understanding traffic patterns): consent, given when you accept Statistics cookies
- Online advertising and ad measurement: consent, given when you accept Marketing cookies
- Site security and fraud prevention: legitimate interests, protecting our website
- Complying with legal and regulatory obligations: legal obligation
You can withdraw your consent at any time by clicking "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page on our website, or via the small consent icon at the bottom-left of every page.
4. Who we share your information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the partners we genuinely need to run the business:
- Squarespace, Inc., our website host. Squarespace processes basic visitor and form data necessary to operate the site. (Squarespace Privacy Notice)
- Toast, Inc., our reservations and payments partner. When you book a table or buy a gift card, your details and payment are processed by Toast on our behalf. (Toast Privacy Statement)
- Cookiebot (Usercentrics A/S), which manages our cookie consent banner and keeps a record of consent decisions. (Cookiebot Privacy Policy)
- Google Ireland Ltd. (Google Analytics 4), which provides anonymised analytics about how our site is used, only if you've accepted Statistics cookies. (Google Privacy Policy)
- Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd. (Meta Pixel), which measures the performance of our Facebook and Instagram advertising and helps us reach relevant audiences, only if you've accepted Marketing cookies. (Meta Privacy Policy)
We may also share information where we are legally required to (for example, responding to a lawful request from law enforcement or regulators).
5. International transfers
Some of our partners (notably Toast, Google and Meta) are based in or transfer data to the United States or other countries outside the UK. These transfers are protected under the UK's "adequacy" arrangements with those countries (where applicable) or by standard contractual clauses and supplementary safeguards as required by UK GDPR.
6. How long we keep your information
We keep your personal information only as long as we need to:
- Bookings: held by Toast in line with their retention practices, typically up to 24 months after your last visit. We may keep our own records of regular customers in our reservations system to recognise you on future visits.
- Gift card records: held by Toast for as long as needed to honour the card and to meet our accounting obligations.
- Email enquiries: kept while we deal with your enquiry and for up to 12 months afterwards in case you come back to us. After that we delete or archive them.
- Analytics data: Google Analytics 4 retains event-level data for 14 months by default. Aggregated reports may be kept longer for trend analysis.
- Cookie consent records: held by Cookiebot for 12 months, after which we ask you again.
7. Cookies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies, grouped into four categories:
- Necessary: required for the site to work (for example session and security cookies). These don't need consent.
- Preferences: remember choices you make to improve your experience.
- Statistics: help us understand how visitors use the site (Google Analytics).
- Marketing: used to show you relevant advertising and measure ad performance (Meta Pixel).
When you first visit our site you'll see a banner asking which categories you'd like to allow. Necessary cookies are always active; the rest are off until you accept them.
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by:
- Clicking "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page, or
- Clicking the small cookie icon at the bottom-left of every page
For a full list of every cookie we use, including its name, provider, purpose and lifetime, open the cookie banner via either link above and click the Details tab.
8. Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the following rights regarding your personal information. To exercise any of them, email contact@theleftbank.co.uk with your request.
- Access: ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Rectification: ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete
- Erasure: ask us to delete your information ("right to be forgotten")
- Restriction: ask us to limit how we use your information
- Portability: ask us to send your information to another service in a common format
- Object: object to us using your information for legitimate-interest or marketing purposes
- Withdraw consent: where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time
We will respond to your request within one calendar month. We will not charge a fee unless your request is clearly unfounded or excessive. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator. You can contact the ICO at https://ico.org.uk or 0303 123 1113. We would, however, appreciate the chance to put things right first, so please do contact us before going to the ICO.
9. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to keep your personal information secure. Our website uses HTTPS encryption, our partners (Squarespace, Toast, Google, Meta, Cookiebot) maintain industry-standard security, and access to booking and email information is limited to authorised members of our team.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we change our reservations system, add new analytics tools, or in response to changes in the law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page tells you when it last changed. We recommend checking it periodically.
